The Kenyan government has taken a huge stride in green renewable energy. As the economic leader in the area and intending to stay that way, the Kenyan government has taken the necessary steps to find new sources for energy. To show that the mean what they say – the government is encouraging the use of renewable energy for both commercial and domestic use and putting $8 billion behind it. The Kenyan government is also prodding businesses to “go green” with tax breaks and incentives.
A large chunck of the $8 billion infusion will be put towards geothermal and solar energy to supply up to 1200MW of green electricity. Kenya is already the area leader in geothermal energy and persists to go on with plans for no less three new geothermal power-plants over the next few years. Kenya currently produces about 200MW from geothermal, but plans to churn out more than 7000MW over the next decade.
KenGen(a Kenyan power utility) has a 10MW wind farm in the works, in addition to the 5MW already in service. Plans are also in the works for 800MW of electricity from PV solar panels.
This small African country is becoming the leader in renewable green eenergy in the region.
Big government, big monopolies and greedy politicians have “kept us in the dark” way too long.
The green energy movement is on its way, but is slow in coming. Politicians are seeing to that. The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has opened the eyes of many and is making it harder for politicians in the U.S. to take money from big oil. There may be hope for green energy sooner rather than later.
Many pundits and liberal politicians have been calling for green energy for years under the false assumption that just because they want it, the technology is there for it. The green renewable energy movement IS here, and here to stay. But…
Green energy has reached the public on a small scale. Hybrid cars and solar phone chargers are all around us. Where are the factories and large plants in the U.S. that are using renewable energy? There may be a few, but I know of not a single large factory that uses 100% renewable energy. You may ask why? The answer is the same as it’s always been – money.
Renewable energy for the masses is just too costly. Oil, coal, and nuclear power are still the lowest cost and surest energy producers. So until the technology is available, lets drill closer to shore(to avoid a deep sea disater like the on in the Gulf), support clean coal technology and build more nuclear power-plants.
For now, it’s on us to “Go Green” ourselves! Use the sun, wind and water. Build solar panels, wind turbines and magneto-generators. Buy hybrid cars, use green cleaning products, etc…
